A single statement by Rima Hassan, the Franco-Palestinian lawyer and candidate on the LFI list for the European elections, about Algeria on the occasion of Independence Day, was enough to provoke indignant reactions from two spokespeople of the Israeli regime.
Rima Hassan wrote that "the Mecca of revolutionaries and freedom is, and will remain, Algeria. Tel Aviv is the capital of a fascist regime and an apartheid state," in response to Raphaël Enthoven's proclamation on the social network X (formerly Twitter) that "Tel Aviv is the Mecca of freedom" and that "every human must make a pilgrimage there at least once, to taste the endless charms of the most joyful, tolerant, open, and lively city in the Middle East."
Rima Hassan's response did not sit well with Julien Dray, a prominent figure in the Socialist Party (PS), who countered by stating that in Algeria, "all those who fight have lost their lives or are imprisoned." By doing so, Julien Dray joined Enthoven in his support for the Israeli regime, highlighting the historical alignment of the PS with Zionism. Enthoven, in his book "Letters to an Arab Friend," harps on the issue of anti-Semitism, propagating lies about the operation carried out by the Palestinian resistance on October 7, 2023.
Julien Dray demonstrated the PS's hypocrisy towards Islamists during an intervention on the LCI channel. The former PS deputy declared that "in the fight against Islamism, there is not only bad news," expressing surprise that the French media did not cover the elections in Morocco more extensively. He pointed out that, for the first time, the Islamist movement was defeated at the polls, going from one hundred and twenty deputies to twelve, and praised the efforts of the King of Morocco.
Julien Dray, a member of the PS since the rise of François Mitterrand to power, regrets that France did not sufficiently support the Islamic Salvation Front (FIS), the extremist Algerian party, in the 1990s. In February 2019, he became involved in the protests in Algeria, calling on Algerians to demonstrate massively. He described this movement as spontaneous and comparable to the Yellow Vests movement in France, all while being embroiled in an embezzlement case and rescued by François Hollande.
It is essential to note that Julien Dray joined the PS during the advent of François Mitterrand, who had imposed an arms embargo on Algeria to prevent the security forces from fighting Islamist terrorism. Mitterrand also supported the FIS and welcomed its violent militants to France, thereby reinforcing the connection between the PS and Zionism in their foreign and security policies.
